3 years on...
Bulb didn’t offer smart meters when I joined 3 years ago. They were “coming soon”.
It’s widely reported that the first generation of smart meters that have been installed in 13 million homes have been dogged with problems. The biggest issue is that they are only compatible with the energy provider that installed it. If you switch to a different provider, it reverts back to a “dumb meter”. You have to take meter readings and lose all the energy monitoring functionality which can be useful.
Well I didn’t want that. I’d be happy to wait for the technology to improve and have Bulb install a second generation ‘smarter’ smart meter when they’re good and ready. I’m quite happy with Bulb at the moment but I always like to keep my options open and if I decide to switch away from Bulb, then I don’t want the hassle of having to install another smart meter. Thankfully, Bulb are aware of this which is why they haven’t rushed any of the smart meters to market.
Even now, Bulb are only installing the newer smart meters in a select regions (Central and South England) but are still reporting problems with the network‡.
People with smart meters from a variety of suppliers are having problems such as connection dropouts and incessant beeping that is driving them mad*. They are even asking if they can have their smart meters removed.
"People are asking if they can have their smart meters removed."
I’m a cautious person and I don’t want to risk having a smart meter that doesn’t work properly and all the headaches that this could cause. I can see the long-term benefits of energy monitoring but in the short term, I don’t feel the technology and network has been widely tested enough to offer a rock-solid solution. I’m happy giving Bulb a manual monthly meter reading with their easy-to-use app.
I will keep on an eye on Bulb’s smart meter rollout but for now, I’ll pass.
I think Bulb is a great renewable energy company. One of the good guys in the market with 5-star customer service. If you sign up using my link, we both get £50. Get a quote first and see if Bulb is right for you.
